Baby shower gifts have been a popular tradition for many centuries now, but the tradition has evolved somewhat over the years. The close friends and family of the mother-to-be will pick a day to surprise the new mother with a celebration and will shower her with presents. The first gifts were handmade items and gifts of silver were first given by the infants grandmother.
The traditional silver spoon and silver rattle were gifts first given by doting grandmothers and it is from this tradition that comes the phrase that one was born with a silver spoon in their hands. Initially the celebration was held at least one month following the birth of the infant. This was due to the fact that young infants were considered to have a more delicate constitution and were protected from too much public interaction during the early days.
The gift giving tradition evolved into a tea party type celebration, also held after the birth of the infant. This tradition continued well into the eighteenth century, mostly because expectant mothers preferred to remain out of the public eye as they neared the end of their term. Over time the tea party evolved into the shower, a distant cousin of the bridal shower which also heralded a momentous alteration in a womans day to day life.
First time mothers are treated to a shower, but mothers who are pregnant for the second, third or more times are treated to a baby sprinkles celebration. Thanks to the wonderful products available today, guests invited to the celebration have a wide selection to choose from.
Bath products and skincare products for infants are a very good and quite useful gift to give. There are endless ranges of shampoos, body products, bath products, lotions and potions available today. Gifts of feeding bottles, pacifiers, diapers, diaper pins, disposable diapers and baby bibs also make welcome gifts. More expensive items, in the form of silver or gold, are traditionally given by close family members.
Soft toys and material items also make a welcome addition. Plush toys in the form of dogs, cats, fish, and other animals as well as balls, teddy bears and fluffy baby blankets are also all good options to choose. The idea of personalizing a clothing item or blanket can turn it into a lovely keepsake.
Keepsakes are gifts to which we attach great sentimental value. A footprint or handprint ornament kit makes a lovely keepsake gift. Alternatively, a photo frame for displaying happy memories is another popular item that you can bring as a gift to a baby shower.
The memory box is a gift which, in itself, makes a lovely keepsake item. Here is a place to display a lovely photograph of the baby along with an imprint of their handprint or footprint. The interior of the memory box is a place to safely store keepsakes and precious memories.
Take a little care when choosing the color scheme for your baby shower gifts, bearing in mind the sex of the child. Traditionally, pinks are for girls and all shades of blue are for little boys. If you are unsure, choose shades of yellow, green or another neutral color.
Choosing new baby baskets are the fabulous opportunities to give the recipient fun and practical gifts that they will need!
